Max ZT is a world-renowned hammered dulcimer player who lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Priya Darshini (from a previous episode) and their adorable little son, Solai. NPR referred to Max as the Jimi Hendrix of hammered dulcimer. Max’s plays mesmerizing music—weaving Indian, African, and Celtic traditions into music that is both medicine and meditation.
In this episode you’ll hear Max talk about discovering the hammered dulcimer as a small child, learning how to play it, and eventually living in first Senegal and then India, where he studied with his guru (teacher), Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who was the world’s foremost santoor player. Max has only ever played hammered dulcimer, it’s been his one and only profession. As a result, he is arguably the most talented player of that instrument in the world. He has been nominated for one Grammy for an album by his band, House of Waters, and for many other albums as a collaborator, including Priya’s album, Periphery.
